Adorable and Cute Turtle buns

IMG_20150115_141142

Turtle buns – this was definitely a treat for my kids .

I used simple yeast bread recipe and shaped it like a turtles with raisin eyes .

They came with lots of happiness and laughter on the food table .

The only problem with these is (they are too cute to be eaten )

I don’t have step by step photos of the recipe , but it’s pretty easy to put together ;

probably one of the easiest animal shape to make .

RECIPE –

INGREDIENTS –

2 ¼ Cup of flour

½ cup of sugar

12 gm of dry yeast

1 tsp of salt

½ cup of milk

1 egg

Cheese to fill in the tummies.

One egg yolk mixed with little bit water for egg wash

Raisins for eyes

RECIPE –

In a large bowl combine flour , salt , sugar , yeast .

Heat the milk until warm , and stir it into the flour mixture ; add the beaten egg .

Now mix the mixture into a dough .

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic about 6 to 8 minutes .

Cover and let it rest for about an hour or until the dough is almost double in size .

Once the dough is finished rising ; punch it down , place it on a clean surface .

Now for the shaping of the turtle .

Take one part of the dough and keep the rest covered so that it don’t dry out.

Split the dough pieces into 1/3 portion for the head and feet .

2/3 portion for the body .

Body – take out a small part and roll it onto a ball, flatten the dough and put the cheese cut into very small pieces ,in the center .

Then gather the ends , pinch them together to close . With a gentle hand roll it into a neat ball.

Now for the shell ,  with the rest of the dough roll out four cylinder and make a braid , round woven challah . ( weaving strands of the dough over one another in a circular pattern ).

Put the shell on the cheese filled ball , and tuck in all the loose end of the braid , pinching it togrther.

Place the body on a baking sheet which is lined with parchment sheet .

Legs – roll out the dough into a cylinder shape , Divide it in four equal  4 parts .

Then roll them for the feet . Now tuck them under the body in appropriate place .

Head- slightly bigger ball then the feet , shape it into a drop shape , and tuck it under the body .

Again at the right place , Now for those eyes pock in two raisins .

The cute little fellow is all ready .

Now for the second rise , cover the turtle with a kitchen cloth , and remember to be very gentle .

Wait for another 45 minutes , when its ready give the turtle  egg wash , very gently .

Put it in the pre heated oven at about 200* c , for 15 minutes . Or until it gets golden brown .

Enjoy them with your kids. Happy kids make , happy families .
