Energy Bites

Energy bites are delicious, satisfying snack. These are also considered as pre-workout/ post-workout bite and a light/ guilt-free dessert after food. When made at home, they’re absurdly customisable. You will be surprised how easy and quick are these to make at home.

I am gonna quickly take you through the five amazing flavours and combinations for no-bake Energy Bites … Energy Balls. 

Making energy bites at home can be so much fun. When preparing for this particular post, I started with an ingredients list on a sheet of paper. Where my mind was thinking of textures and flavours that go well together. The idea paper was overloaded, believe me, I had to seal it down to five combinations, but we can really go on and on and the list will never end.

Feel free to play around with the ingredients of your choice. Just make sure it’s healthy.  Couple of points to keep in mind when customising your energy bites at home. Remember flavour concoction you will need some basic building blocks.

Energy bites

When making energy bites at home keep some construction principles in mind: You’ll want a good mix of sticky stuff (binders) and hearty stuff (fillers) so that your balls are neither crumbly nor goopy. A little bite or crunch (roasted nuts or seeds) will add more texture. And, most importantly, you’ll want them to taste good, too.

Using nut flour (almond, hazelnut, cashew etc.) as an ingredient in the making. You can either buy or make them home. A food processor Morphy Richards Icon Dlx 1000-Watt Food Processor,Blackis the best / easiest way to make nut flour at home.

Tips: First grind the nuts (be they whole or sliced, toasted or raw), pulsing until you have the desired consistency—leave them coarser for a crunchier ball; pulverise for a meltier texture.

Using binders: (figs or dates etc.) Roughly chop and add them to the food processor along. Once they break down to the smaller size, add the rest of the ingredients. They are also a great source of natural energy! If you don’t want to use dates, you can use really any dried fruit (apricots, raisins, candied fruits etc.) you have. Keep in mind that dried figs and dates are so gooey and sugary, you probably won’t need another sweetener. I suggest keep tasting and judging as and when you are adding more ingredients.

Tip: A tablespoon or two of coconut oil will add richness. But this is completely optional.

When using Nuts butter. This is a great source of protein and helps the mixture stick together. Try these with peanut butter, cashew butter or hazelnut butter for a fun twist. How to make nut butter at home.

Seed Butter (Pumpkin or Sunflower) also is a great option. Using Tahini, along with Coconut Oil makes a fantastic combination too.

Optional add-ins– Add nuts, chocolate chips, cacao nibs, seeds, extracts, Ground Cinnamon, Ground Cardamom, Vanilla Extract, Cocoa Powder, Unwaxed Orange/Lime/Lemon Zest, Unrefined Toasted Sesame Seed Oil, spices, shredded coconut and even sprinkles for fun flavour twists and variety! You can literally come up with any flavour profile your heart desires!

Roll into balls- Once your mixture is a sticky mass that coheres into neat balls, you’re ready to roll. I find it easiest to keep a bowl of cool water close by, as I like to wet my hands slightly to form a ball. 

After you’ve made fruit-and-nut balls, don’t miss your chance to give them a fun coating, which will counterbalance the stickiness and make them more beautiful. Try shredded coconut, sesame seeds, cocoa powder or more finely-chopped nuts.

Ingredients 

3/4 cup dried figs chopped

1/4th cup Roasted almond (chopped)

1/4th cup Roasted cashew nuts (chopped)

1 tablespoon of cashew butter

A dash of sea salt

1/4th cup Pistachio

Method 

Place 1/4 cup pistachios and 1 tsp sea salt into a food processor; pulse until finely ground but not powdery, put in a small bowl and set aside.

Add the chopped figs to a food processor with a chopper blade or a mixture. Pulse till coarse paste. Remove in a container and add rest of the ingredients and mix well. Shape the balls and coat with pistachio crumb.

I have used a mix of tropical dry fruits. This is easily available and has all the possible dehydrated fruits where their natural sweetness is locked. Mostly you will find dry mango, pineapple, papayas, coconut, cranberries, kiwi, orange etc mixed together. This is one of the quickest bliss ball recipes. Make sure you are using a good quality chocolate.

Note: Please read the chocolate package; if it has sugar, you can skip on adding extra sweetness to this recipe.

Remember the tropical fruits have their own sweetness.

Ingredients 

1 cup of chopped chocolate

1/4th cup of cream

1/2 cup of chopped mix of tropical fruit mix

A pinch of nutmeg

A dash of salt flakes

Cocoa powder to dust the top before serving

Method 

Heat the cream on a low flame and before it comes to a boil add the chopped chocolate to it. Mix till you get a smooth consistency. You can use a microwave to melt the chocolate or melt on a double boiler. 

Add the rest of the ingredients (leaving cocoa powder) and mix well. You will need to keep the batter in the fridge for some time before making the balls.

When shaped and done Roll the balls in cocoa powder and serve.

After I had prepared and photographed these ball, I had sent a box of energy bites combining all these five flavours to a friend and asked her for a feedback. According to her, there should have been one more flavour in coconut apricot balls. Though I loved this combination; I think then it’s all about personal liking.

My suggestion to you adds some dry mango to this one … maybe aam papad would make a good combination. Because mango and coconut go well together.

Ingredients 

1 cup of shredded coconut

1/4th cup of condensed milk

1/4th cup of soft marzipan

1/2 cup of chopped apricot

Some extra coconut flour to coat the balls

Method 

Mix all the ingredients well and shape into balls.

Ingredients 

1 cup of chopped dates seedless

Roasted seeds of your choice

I have used (pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds)

Method 

Roast all the seeds separately on medium flame and let them cool completely before adding to date mix. 

Add all the chopped dates to a food processor with a chopper blade or a mixture. Pulse till coarse paste. Remove in a bowl and add the roasted seeds, mix well. Shape into balls and enjoy.

I have used some melted chocolate to coat the balls and disguised them to look interesting for kids. I have also added some cocoa powder along with raisin paste, it gives a beautiful contrast to the flavour.

Ingredients 

1 cup of rolled oats

1/4th cup of raisin paste

2 tablespoons of honey

1 spoonful of almond butter

Melted chocolate to coat the balls 

A dash of sea salt

Method 

Mix all the ingredients well and shape into balls. Keep in the fridge for some time before coating with melted chocolate.

Tip: you might need to increase or decrease the quantity of raisin paste (binder). Because it depends on the quality of oats; they might need more or less binder to shape into balls.
