Pound cake is like a mom of all butter cake variations seen nowadays. It is wonderfully rich, moist, tender and buttery with a lovely even golden brown crust. The classic recipe of pound cake contained one pound each of butter, sugar, egg, and flour with the leavening coming from the whipping of sugar and butter.
We break down the traditional formula and add some leavening (baking powder and baking soda) and an additional dairy product—buttermilk, sour cream or yogurt.
